Cyndi Lauper speaks out against North Carolina’s HB2 during Raleigh news conference

By Fabio Crispim

Last month we reported that Cyndi Lauper did not cancel her North Carolina concert over the state’s anti-LGBT laws which prevents transgender people from using the bathroom which correlates to the gender with which they associate.

Lauper performed at the Raleigh concert yesterday (June 4) and then spoke out against the bill during a news conference.

She said: “To have people who are willing to understand what the impact of this law really is and what they’re really doing.”

“I was just surprised that you would want to go back to that kind of law that would promote that much discrimination again.”

“I thought we were stepping forward,” she adds.

Lauper has always been known as a supporter of LGBT rights, founded the True Colors fund that helps to end homelessness among LGBT youth.

Gay Star News reports that The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) supports Lauper’s decision.

JoDee Winterhof, the senior Vice President for Policy and Political Affair said: “We are deeply thankful she has taken time to meet with LGBT youth in North Carolina and hear firsthand the destructive impact Governor McCrory’s deeply discriminatory law is having on their lives.”

“It is imperative for the future of these young people and the future of the entire state of North Carolina that HB2 be repealed and replaced by common sense non-discrimination protections for LGBT people.”
