Dame Helen Mirren says Prime Suspect’s Jane Tennison would have been a lesbian

Dame Helen Mirren has revealed that she believes her Prime Suspect character Jane Tennison would have been a lesbian.

The actress played Detective Superintendent Tennison in seven series of the popular crime series between 1991 and 2006.

The drama concluded with Tennison solving one final case before retiring, something which Mirren believes allowed her to really discover who she is.

“She’s a lesbian, living with a very attractive partner,” Mirren told Event magazine. “She gave up the drinking the moment she left the office and never went back to it. She does yoga.”

Further elborating on her character’s future exploits, she added: “I would imagine she is still working, either advising or lecturing. I don’t think she can stop – she’s too driven.”

Mirren also revealed that she would like to take on a warrior role in HBO’s Game of Thrones: “Very cold and cruel… I’d love that,” she added.
