Dance troupe explores Māori queer culture in Edinburgh show

By Will Stroude

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is almost upon us, and as usual the LGBT output at the world’s biggest theatre festival is second to none. One show in particular has caught our eye, as New Zealand’s leading dance company is brings celebration of Māori queer culture to the Scottish capital.

Sexy, provocative and humorous, K’rd Strip – A Place To Stand is a show unlike any other, twisting Māori mythology with haka, drag queens, live Kiwi music and contemporary dance.

Filled with song, dance and stories of the characters who frequented Karangahape Road at the heart of Auckland’s queer scene, Okareka Dance Company says the show “celebrates the LGBT community and delivers a positive message empowering the next generation of queers to stand tall and claim their own ‘turangawaewae’ – their own place to stand.”

Formed in 2007, Okareka was established to fuse contemporary dance with indigenous Māori themes to tell bold, spiritual stories that are of and from New Zealand. K’rd Strip – A Place To Stand has already been receiving rave reviews and will definitely be at the top of our list when we head up to Edinburgh next month.

K’rd Strip – A Place To Stand will get its UK premiere at Assembly Roxy – Central, August 5 – August 31 at 6.40pm.
