US girlband Danity Kane have announced their split after two of the group’s members reportedly had a physical altercation in a recording studio.

Danity Kane were formed in 2005 on MTV reality show Making the Band. Before breaking up in 2008, the group achieved two US Number One albums with their self-titled debut in 2006 and Welcome to the Dollhouse in 2008.

The band partially reformed last year when members Aubrey O’Day, Shannon Bex and Dawn Richards began work on a comeback album that was due for release later this year. Their new single Lemonade was released earlier this year, and the group embarked on a US tour.

However, Danity Kane have now announced they are breaking up for a second time, which follows a report on TMZ earlier this week that Dawn Richards punched Aubrey O’Day during a meeting in a recording studio.

“During a recent group meeting, a business conversation took a turn for the worst when my group member punched me in the back of my head while I was speaking to another associate,” said O’Day in a statement. “To be clear, she was not physically engaged or threatened prior to her attack on me.”

O’Day continued: “This is the same information I provided to the police, and witnesses also corroborated this account of the incident. I cannot condone or excuse any form of physical violence, particularly at the hands of someone I considered family. Disagreements happen. But a war of words and ideas should never end in physical aggression.”

Third member Shannon Bex corroborated O’Day’s statement, alleging that Richards was unprovoked in her attack.

“As for the actions that have brought us to this broken ending, I cannot speak for anyone or explain their internal struggles that prompted this heartbreaking sequence of events. All I know is what I have seen. I did not witness a shouting match, a cat fight or a brawl. I witnessed a single direct punch,” she said.

Richards has yet to comment on the accusations made against her.
