The DC Extended Universe may be introducing its first ever out supervillain.
In the upcoming movie Birds of Prey, the villain known as Black Mask – who will be played by Ewan McGregor – will go head-to-head against the likes of Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and other members of the team.
And now, We Got This Covered – a Rotten Tomatoes-accredited site – are reporting that the Gotham City crime lord Black Mask will be gay but claims his sexuality is never ‘explicitly stated’.
It reports: “Though [Black Mask’s] sexuality is never explicitly stated [in the film], multiple sources have told We Got This Covered that the sexual tension between him and fellow villain Victor Zsasz will be palpable and the way he acts in general makes it pretty clear that he’s gay.”
Although this is a step forward in LGBTQ representation in a superhero movie, we cannot say we are happy to hear that his sexuality will be notably through ‘the way he acts’.
Birds of Prey will be released next February.
