‘Desperate Housewives’ star Charlie Carver comes out as gay

Desperate Housewives
star Charlie Carver has come out publicly as gay.
The 27-year-old, who is best known for playing Porter Scavo opposite his twin brother Max on the hit ABC series, revealed the news in a series of heartfelt posts on his Instagram page yesterday (January 12), explaining that while his family has known about his sexuality for years, he now wants to be the public role model he never had growing up.
Carver – who has since gone on to star in MTV’s Teen Wolf and LGBT drama film Michael (in which he infamously participated in a rather steamy threesome scene with James Franco and Zachary Quinto) – shared a picture of a quote reading “Be who you needed when you were younger” on his page, alongside an extensive five-part message.
In it, he revealed how he previously feared that revealing he was gay could damage his budding Hollywood career, despite the fact he came to terms with his sexuality at the age of 12.
“As an actor, I believed that my responsibility to the craft and the business was to remain benevolently neutral – I was a canvas, a chameleon, the next character,” he wrote. “For the most part I had a duty to stay a Possibility in the eye of casting, directors, and the public.
“If I Came Out, I feared I would be limiting myself to a type, to a perception with limits that I was not professionally comfortable with. And I created in my imagination an Industry that was just as rigid in this belief as well.
“After having the privilege of playing a range of characters, gay, straight and otherwise, I realize this is not the case.”
He continued: “So now, let the record show this – I self-identify as gay. And does that really matter anymore? As a young man, I needed a young man in Hollywood to say that – and without being a dick about it, I owe it to myself, more than anything, to be who I needed when I was younger.”
“Happy 2016, and all my best to you and yours in the year ahead.”
Big love to you, Charlie – you can read his touching message in full below:
