Diane Warren: ‘I wish I was a lesbian, but I’m not’
By Ben Kelly
Legendary songwriter Diane Warren has confirmed that despite widespread belief, she is not a lesbian.
Speaking in a rare profile piece with BuzzFeed, the 59 year old was asked about the fact that she has never had a long term relationship. “I haven’t really been in love the way most people are in love,” she admits. “I think I love my cat more than I could love any human.”
An article in Out magazine once referred to her as ‘lesbian songwriter’, but speaking to writer Doree Shafrir at her studios in Hollywood, Warren said, “I’m not a lesbian! It’s weird, I’m not gay. Everybody thinks I am, and I wish I was, to be honest, because I have some great lesbian friends, and they’d be great girlfriends, but I’m not a lesbian.”
Warren is one of the most influential songwriters working in the music business. Since the early 1980s she has written hits for the world’s biggest artists, including Cher, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Beyonce and Paloma Faith.
Vocal on Twitter, but fairly low key in real life, she has been referred to as ‘the Emily Dickinson of pop.’
She made the headlines earlier this week when fellow songwriter Linda Perry suggested Lady Gaga didn’t deserve a credit on the Oscar nominated song Till It Happens To You, since a demo evidences Warren wrote the whole thing herself.
This year is the eighth time Warren has been nominated for the Best Original Song at the Oscars, although she has never yet won. Her most famous movie hits include Celine Dion’s ‘Because You Loved Me’, LeAnn Rimes’ ‘How Do I Live’, and Aerosmith’s ‘I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing’.
