Dolly Parton TV movie biopic gets premiere date

By Will Stroude

Dolly Parton’s NBC television movie biopic Coat of Many Colours has been given an official air date – and will be here just in time for Christmas.

The Peacock Network has announced that the first in its series of movies based on the legendary star’s life and career will premiere on Thursday, December 10.

Named after her 1971 hit, Coat of Many Colours will dramatise the star’s early life, dealing in particular with her impoverished upbringing in rural Tennessee. Newcomer Alyvia Lind has been cast as the young version of Dolly, while country music superstar Jennifer Nettles will play the singer’s mother.

Often cited by Parton as one of her personal favourites, the original song tells the true story of how her mother made her a coat out of rags, which she loved and wore to school, only to be ridiculed by her classmates.

The film “takes us inside the tight-knit Parton family as they struggle to overcome devastating tragedy and discover the healing power of love, faith, and a raggedy patchwork coat that helped make Dolly who she is today,” according to an offical description

Parton signed a deal with NBC earlier this year which will see the production of a series of standalone TV movies based on her songs, stories and life. Though they will contain music, they won’t be ‘musicals’, and Parton hasn’t ruled out appearing in some herself.
