Eurovision 2014: UK has best odds of winning in 20 years
By Nick Levine
The United Kingdom has the best odds of winning Eurovision in 20 years, according to the latest prices from bookmakers William Hill.
Children of the Universe, performed by up-and-coming singer-songwriter Molly, is now 7/1 to win – making the UK fifth favourite behind Sweden (5/2), Austria’s Conchita Wurst (11/4), Netherlands (3/1) and Armenia (13/2).
A William Hill rep said in a press release: “We have seen money for Molly all week – She is going down a storm in Copenhagen and the odds suggest that we have not had such a good chance for 20 odd years.”
Spain’s entry, Dancing in the Rain by X Factor star Ruth Lorenzo, is a 40/1 outsider to claim victory.
This year’s Eurovision final takes place in Copenhagen, Denmark and will be shown live on BBC One tonight (May 10) from 8pm.
The United Kingdom last won Eurovision in 1997 when Love Shines a Light by Katrina and the Waves claimed victory. Over the last ten years, the UK has finished, in reverse chronological order: 19th, 25th, 11th, 25th, 5th, 25th, 22nd, 19th, 22nd and 16th.
