After exploring faith and sexuality on his profound debut single ‘Jesus Is a Preston Boy’ and the first buds of queer love on assured follow-up ‘Paper Cups’, Paul Usher’s latest track is taking him into darker emotional territory.
‘Never Gonna Leave Him’ sees the Manchester singer-songwriter explore the mental (and sexual) turmoil of seeing a former lover with a new partner – and if that heartwrenching subject reminds you of Robyn’s iconic track ‘Dancing On My Own’, the track’s accompanying video might also remind you of the Swedish songstress’s unforgettable moves in ‘Call Your Girlfriend’.
Usher’s newly-released visual sees him dancing solo in a neon-lit warehouse in a cathartic moment of queer self-expression – and like his previous singles, the track’s emotionally-resonant subject matter is drawn from his own life.
Discussing the inspiration for ‘Never Gonna Leave Him’, Paul says: “I saw the first guy I’d ever loved across the dancefloor for the first time since we’d parted ways.
“Even in the darkness of a club, filled with seemingly thousands of people, we locked eyes, instinctively; the connection never falters.
“We caught up and the attraction was still powerful. But he was with somebody new and the song wrestles with the internal conflict created, which I’m sure others can relate to.”
