Exclusive | Watch the trailer for critically acclaimed gay opera ‘Boys of Paradise’

By Will Stroude

This October sees the grand return of Boys Of Paradise, the critically-acclaimed gay opera that left audiences with withdrawal symptoms last year after performing sold-out shows to crazed masses and being nominated for the British New Music Theatre Award 2015.

Following ‘Twink’, ‘Cub’ and ‘Fag Hag’ on a night out to remember, the genre-breaking and open-minded production dives straight into the world of the Vauxhall clubbing scene and chemsex parties as Twink is led astray through a maze of drink, drugs and darkrooms.

Directed by Workshopera Artistic Director Anna Pool and produced by Tête à Tête, Boys of Paradise is returning to EGG London by popular demand, and we’re thrilled to officially premiere to show’s trailer ahead of its second run next month.

Discussing the opera’ origins, it’s composer, 23-year-old Vahan Salorian, reveals that he wanted to provide a snapshot of south London’s gay scene, without being “preachy” about its darker aspects.

“The plot and certain characters are based on my own personal experience – and there was definitely some catharsis when we first put the show on,” he says.

“I think there’ll be lots of people in the audience who can relate to the situations that ‘Twink’ finds himself in. Overall though, we just want people to have a great time, laugh, dance and get into the clubbing scene.

“It’s a neurotic, erotic, psychotic operatic adventure!”

Boys of Paradie is at EGG London from 15-21 October, with performances at 7:30pm and 9:30pm every night. Tickets available at £18 (£12 for concessions) via Tête-à-Tête.
