Former X Factor star Lloyd Daniels is set to star in a new LGBT musical.
Based on the 2015 award-winning short film of the same name, Closets tells the story of a gay teen struggling with his sexuality in 1980s Britain, who unexpectedly time travels to 2018, where he meets another closeted boy of the same age and embarks on a series of time-travelling adventures.
Daniels, who appeared on the 2009 series of The X Factor alongside acts like Joe McElderry and Olly Murs, eventually finishing in fifth place, will star in the musical alongside Ackley Bridge star Sam Retford.
A plot synopsis reads: “It’s 1988, 16 year old Henry is struggling with his sexuality, identity and daily battles with his mother. He goes inside his Closet and unexpectedly time travels to 2018 and meets 16 year old Ben living in his bedroom dealing with similar issues today.
“Ben and Henry decide to run away from their lives by time travelling in the Closet, taking them on adventures to New York’s Stonewall bar in 1969 and beyond.
“But how long can they run from their lives before their time zones catch up with them?”
Closets will make its world musical theatre premiere on stage at Manchester’s Hope Mill Theatre this August, featuring 13 original numbers.
