Frank Ocean opens up about love life, says he's conquered his 'shame and self-loathing'

R’n’B crooner Frank Ocean is one of the world’s most well known – and enigmatic – LGBT stars. Since opening up about his first true (and unrequited) love for another man as he released critically-acclaimed debut album Channel Orange in 2012 the singer has built a veil of mystery around himself, rarely commenting on his personal life except through occasional posts on his Tumblr page – including one letter of solidarity in the wake of the Orlando attacks, in which he wrote, “many hate us and wish we didn’t exist.”

Now, Attitude’s 2016 Artist of the Year has spoken about finding dating easier since hitting the big time, hinting that he is more at ease with himself since coming out in 2012.

In an interview with the New York Times, the 29-year-old said that dating had become more “normal” than when he first burst on to the scene.

“I’m in a very different place than I was four or five years ago with all that stuff,” he said. “Different in my relationship with myself, which means everything. There’s no, like, shame or self-loathing. There’s no, you know, crisis.”

But despite having found himself more at peace with romance, the star is yet replicate the love that inspired the 2012 Tumblr post.

Asked if he’d been in love since that point, he replied: “Not the lasting kind.”

Meanwhile, Ocean’s recently released second album, Blonde, was sold alongside a limited number of copies of a magazine called Boys Don’t Cry. The magazine included a poem entitled Boyfriend, in which Ocean Gushes over his boyfriend, writing:

my boyfriend he misses me when i’m gone
so he don’t forget me
there’s a song he sings
calms his nerve, endings
my boyfriend is friendly
and we don’t want no problems
