David Hyde Pierce is to return to TV with a recurring role in acclaimed US legal drama The Good Wife.

The actor – best known for playing Dr Niles Crane on Frasier – will play a respected cable news commentator who is so disgusted by the Chicago crime rate he decides to run for office, reports Deadline.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled and flattered that David’s making The Good Wife his first TV role since Frasier,” said the show’s executive producers Robert and Michelle King. “We’re tremendous fans of his dramatic skills as well as his comedy.”

Pierce played Dr Niles Crane on long-running US sitcom Frasier between 1993 and 2004, a role which earned him four Emmy Awards. He has since worked mainly in the theatre, and came out as gay in 2007.

The new season of The Good Wife will debut on September 21 on US network CBS. The show airs on More4 in the UK.
