‘Frozen’ director finally addresses Elsa’s sexuality
Will we finally be getting an LGBT Disney princess?
Elsa might finally be getting a girlfriend.
Since Frozen’s release, fans have been calling for the film’s lead character to get a girlfriend in the upcoming sequel, with the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend to go viral in 2016. Fan-made petitions to give Elsa a girlfriend also got thousands of signatures.
While Idina Menzel, who voices the popular character, previous said she’s excited at the idea of Elsa being lesbian, there had yet to be an official word from any of the film’s producers… until now.
In a new interview with the Huffington Post, co-director Jennifer Lee revealed she’s heard the speculation surrounding Elsa’s sexuality.
Lee said: “I love everything people are saying [and] people are thinking about with our film – that it’s creating dialogue, that Elsa is this wonderful character that speaks to so many people.
“It means the world to us that we’re part of these conversations.”
“Where we’re going with it, we have tons of conversations about it, and we’re really conscientious about these things. For me… Elsa’s every day telling me where she needs to go, and she’ll continue to tell us. I always write from character-out, and where Elsa is and what Elsa’s doing in her life, she’s telling me every day.”
She added: “We’ll see where we go.”
Disney has received praise for including several LGBT moments in recent films. The 2017 reboot of Beauty And The Beast featured LeFou dancing with another man and was described as an “exclusively gay moment”.
Along with this, 2016’s Finding Dory featured a lesbian couple and Disney allegedly revealed they’re open to having an LGBT princess.
Meanwhile, the company made history after a Disney Channel show featured a gay storyline which saw a character come out as gay.
Frozen 2 is set for a 2019 release.
