Firebird, the Soviet-era set gay romance drama, will be in UK cinemas from 22 April, it has been announced.
The film, which premiered at the BFI Flare LGBTQIA Film Festival last year, focuses on Sergey, a private in the Soviet Air Force, whose life is turned upside down when the daring fighter pilot Roman arrives at his base in Estonia.
The two embark on a dangerous relationship, which is further complicated by the presence of Luisa, Sergey’s best friend, and secretary to the air base’s commander.
The film is based on the memoir of the real-life Sergey Fetisov, A Tale About Roman. It was co-written by lead actor Tom Prior and director Peeter Rebane.
Speaking to Attitude earlier this year as he appeared on the cover of the February issue, Tom said he hopes the film helps promotes a “greater understanding and awareness”, as well as pulling on people’s heartstrings adding, “Can’t we just let people be in love with who they’re in love with?”
He added: “Some of the best feedback I’ve experienced is people writing to me and saying, ‘I’m not part of this community, but as a result of your film, I will treat this community with a greater respect knowing the trials and tribulations that they’ve had to go through.'”
Firebird is out in UK cinemas on 22 April.
