Girl group GRL have apparently split

By Will Stroude

Two members of US girlband GRL have seemingly quit the group, just nine months after the death of former member Simone Battle.

Fans noticed over the weekend that Emmalyn Estrada and Paula van Oppen had removed ‘GRL’ from their Twitter handles, as well as any mention of the band in their bios.

As speculation as to the band’s future mounted, fellow member Lauren Bennett – who notably featured on LMFAO’s Part Rock Anthem in 2011 – seemingly confirmed the pair’s exit, thanking fans for their support though “tough” and “confusing” times.

There’s been no word from Paula or Emmalyn about their status in the group, bar a cryptic tweet sent by Paula on Sunday (May 30).

GRL were formed in 2013 by Pussycat Dolls creator Robin Antin before scoring a UK Top 20 hit with their debut single Ugly Heart last year, but the release was mired in tragedy after former Battle – a former X Factor USA contestant – took her own life the week of its release, following a secret battle with depression.

After initially taking a break to deal with the loss, the group released follow-up single Lighthouse as a four-piece earlier this year, dedicating both the song and video to their former bandmate.

Speaking to Attitude earlier this year, the group admitted it had been tough to carry on following the tragedy, but added they hoped it would raise awareness about mental health issues.

“People need to start talking about [depression] and we’re very lucky to be standing here with this opportunity to stand for something positive,” Emmalyn said.

GRL’s debut album was scheduled to be released later this year via Kemosabe Records, with Dr. Luke serving as executive producer.

With no official statement from the band as yet, it’s unclear whether remaining members Lauren Bennett and Natasha Slayton will continue on as a duo, look for replacement members, or split completely – but either way, it’s another sad chapter in what was one of the most exciting musical prospects of 2014.
