We could be in for a new version of Glee if recent comments are anything to go by. Fox’s Entertainment President, Michael Thorn, has hinted at a possible return for the jukebox musical TV show, adding to previous comments suggesting a comeback.
The show, which ran for six seasons from 2009 to 2015 and at times stretched the limits of the audience’s imagination (remember in season three when Quinn goes from wheelchair to full nationals dance choreography in a matter of weeks?) was a hit with fans and critics for its diverse cast and often iconic covers of already iconic songs.
The show has maintained something of a cult following, becoming popular on social media platforms such as TikTok, with people often making fun of the show’s more insane moments.
“Love to do more”
Speaking to Deadline about bringing back the dramatic series, 24, Thorn mentioned that Fox was also considering bringing back other projects, including Glee.
Referencing the network’s upcoming musical-comedy series The Big Leap, which may be running after Glee walked, Thorn, said he’d “love to do more” of the latter. However, he added Fox had yet to hear any pitches for a reboot of the show.
“We always welcome celebrating our iconic shows and revisiting those with surprising takes and new approaches so, especially in this crowded market, we’re always open to reinventing our best IP with some of our favourite partners.”
It’s not the first time in recent months that the idea of revisiting Glee has been voiced. Last summer Glee’s creator, Ryan Murphy, reminisced about the show and gave fans an idea of what he’d do if he could do it all again.
The original cast of Glee
In a now-deleted Instagram post, he imagined the cast including his muses Lea Michele, Ben Platt, and Beanie Feldstein (the latter two were both in actual high school at the time the show aired)
Outlining a plot, he said: “Lea and Ben are frenemies who fight for the heart and soul of Glee Club. Ben is also on the football team, and pretty much sleeps with the entire school, and is the heartthrob of McKinley.
“Beanie is their mutual best friend and torn. Suddenly, Beanie joins forces with Sue Sylvester, joins Glee Club, and becomes the main soloist and the ruthless star of the club. Lea and Ben have to then join forces to dethrone her.”
Despite the show’s often wild plots and tone-deafness, the show was a welcome boost for LGBTQ representation on mainstream TV, especially in content aimed at a younger audience.
In its run, the show featured the gay characters Kurt Hummel and Blaine Anderson, a well as depicting Santana Lopez’s (played by the late Naya Rivera) journey from closeted to out and proud lesbian. The show also featured trans and bisexual characters.
If the show is to return it would be great to see similar LGBTQ representation and celebrate LGBTQ artists in the music they cover.
