Nick Grimshaw apparently received “homophobic death threats” after One Direction fans mistakenly thought he had branded band member Louis Tomlinson “annoying”.

During a light-hearted segment on his Radio 1 Breakfast Show yesterday morning (February 25), Grimshaw made a list of celebrities he deems “more annoying than Lorde”, selecting Usher, Kelly Osbourne and Joey Essex.

The show’s producer Ian Chaloner then dropped Tomlinson’s name into the ring.

This was apparently enough to incur the wrath of the boyband’s notoriously protective fans, who proceeded to tweet abuse at Grimshaw, prompting him to tweet back: “hey 1D fans!!!!! i never mentioned the word “Louis” on my show today so enough with the charming homophobic death threats yeh?”

Grimshaw, 29, who came out as gay in August 2012, is known for his friendship with One Direction’s Harry Styles, a frequent guest on his Radio 1 Breakfast Show.
