Gus Kenworthy surprises Adam Rippon with a kiss at the 2018 GLAAD Awards

And social media went wild

Gay Winter Olympians Gus Kenworthy and Adam Rippon caused a storm this week at the GLAAD Awards after sharing a kiss onstage.

The two athletes, who struck up a friendship at this year’s Winter Olympics, dropped by the GLAAD Awards on Thursday (April 12) in Los Angeles where they gave a joint speech at the awards ceremony.

During Rippon’s speech, the figure skater revealed that one of his biggest accomplishments came from helping Gus “come out of his shell”.

He said: “I’ve had such a big year, but really I think my biggest accomplishment so far is finally getting Gus to come out of his shell.

“Four years ago, he was afraid to kiss his boyfriend after he won silver in Sochi. Now, he’s unleashed.”

Kenworthy, who’s dating actor and model Matthew Wilkas and made history after kissing him on TV at the Winter Olympics, added: “Literally, I’ll kiss anybody” before surprising Rippon (and us) with an unexpected kiss.

The kiss was met with an adorable reaction from Rippon, who seemed completely stunned at what had happened, and drove social media wild as fans of the athletes expressed their approval.

The pair attended the event together and managed to meet pop star Britney Spears who was honoured with the Vanguard Award.

In her speech, Spears thanked her LGBT fans for their unconditional love, saying: “We can lift each other up and show our gifts without hesitation.”

Other winners from the night include The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons and Master Of None actress and writer Lena Waithe.

You can watch the 2018 GLAAD Media Awards in its entirety later this month.
