Gwyneth Paltrow to star in new Ryan Murphy show ‘One Hit Wonders’
By Will Stroude
He might have only just launched Scream Queens and the latest installment of American Horror Story, but Ryan Murphy is already forging ahead with his next TV series: a musical comedy drama about ’90s one hit wonders starring Gwyneth Paltrow.
The Glee creator’s latest project, aptly named One Hit Wonders, would see Paltrow as a washed up former pop star who is contacted by a record label looking to form a supergroup with three other one hit wonders from the 1990s. Though the label has ulterior motives, the group takes off and the trio becomes an inspiration to women everywhere.
“I love this idea that there is a second act,” Murphy told The Hollywood Reporter, adding that the show would feature original music and also take on an anthlogy format, with cast and storylines starting changing each season.
One Hit Wonders was originally picked up as a film for Sony back in 2012, with Paltrow, Cameron Diaz and Reese Withaspoon set to star as the main trio – though Paltrow currently remains the only actress connected to the project.
The 43-year-old previously guest-starred in Murphy’s hit Fox musical comedy Glee as substitute teacher Holly Holliday, in a role which also saw her perform her own musical numbers. Murphy meanwhile insists One Hit Wonders will make a “much better” TV show than film, and that he already has themes for four seasons mapped out.
