Twin brothers David and Jason Benham, who saw their planned US reality show scrapped last week (May 6) after expressing homophobic views, have said that gay National Football League (NFL)  player Michael Sam’s sexuality is “not healthy”.

In an interview on Monday (May 12), the brothers spoke out against the ‘demonic force’ at the heart of the campaign for gay rights before criticising Sam, The Blaze reports.

The 24-year-old became the first out gay NFL player when he was drafted into the St. Louis Rams team on Saturday (May 10).

“Michael Sam is a talented football player and for that, he should be playing in the NFL,” David Benham said. “But his sexual expressions and the propagation of them are not healthy for him as a young man.”

Brother Jason added: “The reason why I feel for Michael Sam is the same agenda that pushed us out of the limelight is elevating him to the limelight – a seventh-rounder with so many endorsements. You can see what’s happening here and the minute that he decides to go against that, he’s going to be crushed. But we’ll be here to give him some encouragement and help him along the way.”

The brothers made the comments just a week after their planned property series Flip It Forward was cancelled after David Benham’s homophobic views were publicised.

HGTV decided not to move ahead with the show after website Right Wing Watch  published a report highlighting David Benham’s extreme right-wing views. The report featured an excerpt from a speech Benham made at a prayer rally in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2012 in which he said that “we [America] have a homosexuality and its agenda that is attacking the nation”.

Flip It Forward was to have debuted on HGTV this October.
