‘How to Get Away with Murder’ first network drama to discuss PrEP
By Will Stroude
ABC’s critically-acclaimed legal drama/murder mystery series How to Get Away with Murder was notable for its unabashed portrayal of gay relationships during its first season last year, and has continued in the same vein by becoming the first network television drama to address the topic of PrEP.
Last Thursday’s season two premiere saw law students Connor (Jack Falahee) and Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) discuss their relationship and use of the anti-retroviral drugs, which have proved almost 100% effective in preventing HIV transmission but have been criticised by some for ‘encouraging’ people not to use condoms and thus put themselves at risk of other STIs.
While Looking, which aired on premium cable channel HBO, dealt with the issue of PrEP during its second season, this marks the first time a network television drama has broached the topic.

Show creator Shonda Rimes previously defended the explicit sex scenes between Connor and Oliver during the show’s first season by saying the show has “no gay scenes, just scenes with people in them” – read more here.
Season two of How to Get Away with Murder airs in the US Thursday nights on ABC, and is expected to air in the UK on Universal this autumn.
