A character from DreamWorks’ hit animated film How to Train Your Dragon comes out as gay in the upcoming sequel.

Gobber the Belch, voiced by Craig Ferguson, the right-hand man to Gerard Butler’s character Stoick the Vast, makes a low-key allusion to his sexuality in next month’s How To Train Your Dragon 2E! reports.

A scene in the sequel sees hulking Viking Gobber (pictured on the left in this article’s picture) watch a husband and wife bicker, prompting him to say that is why he never married – before he adds that there is another reason.

Confirming that this exchange is Gobber’s subtle way of coming out, the film’s screenwriter/director Dean DeBlois, who is gay himself, said: “I think that’s a really fun and daring move to put in. I love the idea that Gobber is Berk’s resident gay.”

How To Drain Your Dragon received rave reviews when it was released in 2010, and earned nearly $500 million (£300 million) at the box office worldwide. How To Train Your Dragon 2 is released in the UK on June 27.
