Indian superstar won’t explicitly reveal his sexuality over fears of prosecution

By Darren Mew

Bollywood superstar Karan Johar  has caused controversy in India with the release of his autobiography.

Actor, director and producer Johar — also known as KJo — is hugely popular in India and has dropped hints about his sexuality before but never stated it outright.

In his autobiography, An Unsuitable Boy, he writes: “Everybody knows what my sexual orientation is. I don’t need to scream it out.

“If I need to spell it out, I won’t only because I live in a country where I could possibly be jailed for saying this.

“Which is why I, Karan Johar, will not say the three words that possibly everybody knows about me.”

The Indian Penal Code deems same-sex relationships an “unnatural offence”.

In the summer of 2015 there were 1,491 under the legislation, with nearly all of the people arrested being male.
