The American Film Institute (AFI) has honoured Jane Fonda with a lifetime achievement award.

Fonda, 76, has won two Oscars during a movie career that now spans over five decades, and is known for her roles in films including They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, Klute, Coming Home, On Golden Pond, Barbarella, Nine to 5 and Monster-in-Law.

The iconic actress was honoured in a special ceremony in Los Angeles last night featuring speeches from A-list stars such as Sandra Bullock, Meryl Streep, Cameron Diaz and Michael Douglas.

Douglas, who worked with Fonda on the 1979 film The China Syndrome, praised the actress for her remarkable and multi-faceted career, saying:

“I learned not only is Jane an amazing actress, but she is the world’s greatest multi-tasker. She was simultaneously an actress, she was a mum, she was a fitness expert and a brave, very courageous political activist. So, deep down, who really is Jane Fonda? She is one of a kind… Jane you are true film royalty, not through birth, but through your talent.”

Meanwhile, in March it was announced that Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are to star together in a new Netflix comedy series from the co-creator of Friends. The actresses, who famously appeared together in  Nine to Five, have signed up for Netflix’ original series Grace and Frankie, playing two long-term rivals whose husbands run off with each other.
