Jimmy Somerville: ‘I’m releasing a full-on disco album’
By Josh Haggis
Jimmy Somerville has revealed that his next album is “full-on disco”.
The former Bronski Beat singer is interviewed in the latest issue of Attitude, where he discusses the inspiration behind his iconic hit Smalltown Boy – which is enjoying a revival after being used in Boots’ Christmas advert last year.
Somerville, 53, goes on to reveal a few teasers about his new album – his first full-length effort since 2009.
“I’ve just finished a full-on disco album. It’s hilarious, but very grown up and real,” he says. “I’ve had fun with it, but a couple of tracks are motivated by trying to appeal to someone’s heartstrings.”
He also reassures fans that he hasn’t lost his political edge, however, adding: “One lyric, I’m told, is very agitprop! But a part of me is still motivated by that.”
“The biggest political thing we’re facing is the war on what welfare actually means – its true meaning has been distorted and lost,” Somerville then adds.”
The full interview with Jimmy Somerville appears in the latest issue of Attitude, featuring Thom Evans on the cover, which is available to pick up in shops now, or to download to your iPad or tablet device.
