JK Rowling hints at openly gay Dumbledore in upcoming ‘Fantastic Beasts’ films

By Will Stroude

With young Dumbledore’s appearance throughout the latest Harry Potter world film franchise, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, already confirmed, many have been wondering how the “greatest wizard of all time” will brought to life; particularly in regards to his sexuality, which Rowling confirmed in 2007 when she revealed, “I always thought of Dumbledore as gay.”

And with Grindelwald, the dark wizard Dumbledore fell in love with during his youth, confirmed feature in the franchise (played by Johnny Depp),  it seems as though their relationship will be, to say the least, complicated.

“I can’t tell you everything I would like to say because this is obviously a five-part story so there’s lots to unpack in that relationship,” she told a press conference on Thursday (November 10).

“You will see Dumbledore as a younger man and quite a troubled man — he wasn’t always the sage. We’ll see him at that formative period of his life.”

Speaking specifically about his sexuality, Rowling hinted: “As far as his sexuality is concerned… Watch this space.”

Directed by David Yates, Fantastic Beasts stars Eddie Redmayne as Ministry of Magic employee Newt Scamander, and is set to be the first instalment in a series of five films.

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them is released in UK cinemas on November 18.
