John Barrowman: ‘It’s time we had a gay superhero on TV’

By Josh Haggis

John Barrowman has argued that it’s time there was a gay superhero on television.

Barrowman stars in CW shows Arrow and The Flash, the latter of which was praised by LGBT groups last year when it became the first ever US TV show to feature an openly gay supervillain, played by bisexual actor Andy Mientus.

In a new interview, the former Torchwood actor has insisted that regardless of whether the public are ready, it’s about time there was a gay superhero on television for LGBT youths to look up to.

“Personally, I don’t care if they are, or not,” Barrowman told The Advocate. “It’s time we had one.”

Speaking about Mientus’ casting as a gay supervillain, Danielle Panabacker, who plays Dr. Caitlin Snow on The Flash added: “It’s sad to me that it has to be a brave thing to bring a character like that on television, but I love that we’re doing it.”
