Jonathan Groff will “never forget” playing King George on Broadway
It’s been a big year on stage for Looking star Jonathan Groff as he’s swapped the small screen to tread the boards in a number of London and New York productions.
This week Groff told Charlie Rose his current role playing King George on Broadway in Hamilton would be something he’ll “never forget”, reports Gay Star News.
“It’s like a drug coming out there every night. It’s so amazing to be breathing in the air of the Hamilton experience. That alone is so incredibly special and something I’ll never forget.”
Joining the Off-Broadway season at The Public Theater in March, Groff replaced Brian d’Arcy James for the remainder of its run through to May 3, before reprising the role in the Broadway transfer to the Richard Rodgers Theatre, which commenced on July 13.
Performing for just nine minutes on stage each performance, Groff said he provides some comic relief and despite performing the monologue over 100 times, he has not “gotten sick of it”.
“It is so naughty and wonderful, and the audience is always so receptive to it.”
Calling Off-Broadway experience “amazing”, Groff said the show had the room to evolve and find its power, and the ensemble “were still discovering some big things”.
“Between the audience’s anticipation growing and growing, and then the actors on stage filling the space, I couldn’t not watch it, I couldn’t leave the show because it had this explosive energy about it,” he said.
With lyrics, music and book by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton is inspired by Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton.
Groff and the Hamilton cast have been nominated for Best Musical Theatre Album at the 2016 Grammy Awards.
