Kelly Clarkson: ‘I was blackmailed into working with Dr Luke’
By Ben Kelly
Kelly Clarkson has described Dr Luke as “not a good person”, revealing that she was forced into working with the controversial producer after initially falling out with him during the recording of 2005’s Breakaway.
Two of Clarkson’s biggest hits were produced by Dr Luke – 2004’s ‘Since U Been Gone’ and 2009’s ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’. Asked about her experience of working with him, she told Australia’s KIIS FM Radio: “We’ve clashed before. He’s difficult to work with, he’s kind of demeaning.”
The 33-year-old continued: “The last time I worked with him I only worked with him because literally I got blackmailed by my label,” “It was a really hard time for me. They were like, ‘We will not put your album out if you don’t do this’.”
Dr Luke is currently at the centre of a scandal in which pop star Kesha claims she was sexually assaulted by him ten years ago.
Her label Sony recently rejected her bid to be released from a contract which requires her to continue recording her albums with him. This caused a public outpouring of support for the ‘Tik Tok’ singer on social media.
Clarkson did stress however, that her situation was very different to Kesha’s, and that she had not been sexually assaulted by Luke.
Responding to a request for comment from Digital Spy, Dr Luke merely responded with an extract from the memoir of music mogul Clive Davis, which details how the pairing of himself and Clarkson came about.
“Max and Luke were relentless in getting the right performance of their song,” he wrote. “Kelly got her back up, and from her perspective, she had a horrible experience in the studio. She’d never work with them again, she said.”
Dr Luke denies all claims of sexual assault which have been made against him.
