Kylie Minogue’s Disco – Guest List Edition review: ‘The gift that keeps on giving’

Originally released in November last year to cheer up a COVID-restricted world, Disco saw Kylie Minogue hanging up her cowgirl boots to do what she does best, with a full-throttle dance album whose call to get up and boogie was impossible to resist.

It also earned her a place in the record books as the first female artist to hit the number one spot on the albums charts in five consecutive decades and led to the euphoric Infinite Disco livestream, with our jump-suited girl having a blast with a bunch of socially-distanced dancers on a Saturday Night Fever-style dancefloor underneath huge disco balls.

Camp was never more absolutely fabulous and when she brought out a gospel choir for ‘All The Lovers’ and ‘Say Something’ it was tear-inducingly brilliant.

We then got a remixed version of the album’s ‘Real Groove’ as a dream Kylie/Dua Lipa duet. As if that wasn’t fantastic enough, she followed it with the insanely catchy Years & Years hook-up ‘A Second to Midnight’ and the ‘Kiss of Life’ collab with Jessie Ware, complete with a hilarious video.

Now comes the treasure trove that is Disco: Guest List Edition.

For the thrifty there’s a 2CD set featuring the original album and bonus tracks plus all the aforementioned duets, not to mention one with – wait for it – disco legend Gloria Gaynor!

If ‘Can’t Stop Writing Songs About You’ isn’t the hi-energy stomper you might expect from the divas’ meet-up it’s a nonetheless magnificent slow groove. And you get hi-energy in spades on a second ‘Real Groove’ remix that pays homage to Stock Aitken Waterman, plus redos of ‘Say Something’, ‘Magic’, and ‘Dance Floor Darling’. (Minus, sadly, the delirious speed-up in the middle).

Vinyl junkies get all of the above on a 3LP set but it’s the limited edition boxset that’s most worth shelling out for. The 2CD edition is complemented by a third CD of the Infinite Disco audio along with the show itself on DVD and Blu-ray.

What a show it remains! With beefed-up vocals and added bass from the livestream itself, it’s 50 minutes of pure joy as our dance floor darling does lots of new material alongside choice cuts from her back catalogue like ‘Light Years’, ‘Love At First Sight’, and a genius mash-up of ‘Slow’ with Donna Summer’s ‘Love To Love You Baby’.

A behind-the-scenes documentary proves they had just as much fun putting it together as we do watching. Kylie comes across as she always does – as the nicest, most humble, and enthusiastic of pop princesses.

Now if only she could be persuaded to take Disco on tour. That would be wow, wow, wow, wow.
