Lady Gaga reveals that ‘Gaga is a bit of a creation’
Lady Gaga sat down with Jamie Lee Curtis for Variety and PBS’s Actors on Actors and the pair decided to discuss the nature of playing characters.
The pair discussed Gaga’s role as the Countess for Ryan Murphy’s anthology series American Horror Story.
But then Curtis hit the nail on the head when she asked the 27-year-old pop-star, real name Stefani Germanotta, the big question: “Is Gaga a character?”
And to be honest, Gaga’s answer has left us all confused.
She said, “What I really am as Gaga really is, at this moment, what other people think Gaga is. It’s not necessarily what I am entirely.”
Did that make sense?
“Even if I feel like Gaga, meaning this stronger individual person of myself that I discovered being young in New York, loving music, meeting with young artists, working with musicians, with writers, studying the scene and being involved in the lifestyle – I started to call myself Gaga after other people called me Gaga. It was this nickname I had for me at my best.”
“It is a bit of a creation,” she adds. “But I think actually, at this point now, it’s other people that have created, through what I have made, their perception of what Gaga is as a separate entity from me.”
She also states that Gaga is an “amalgamation of my self Stefani, the young Italian-American girl from New York that’s an actress, a songwriter, and another part of me is what I’m creatively interested in at the time with music and how that culture and style and the art that arose out of that is influencing me as I’m reading it and writing music.”
Whoever Gaga is, she better get on with that new album.
