Lloyd-Webber’s latest West End musical to close early
By Nick Levine
Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s latest musical, Stephen Ward, is to close after a West End run of just four months.
The £2.5m production began previews at London’s Aldwych Theatre on December 3 and had its official opening night on December 19, drawing rather underwhelming reviews from theatre critics.
The show, based on the notorious Profumo Affair political scandal of 1963, was originally booking until March 1 but later had its run extended to May 31.
However, the curtains will now go down on Stephen Ward for the final time on March 29.
Lloyd-Webber composed the music for Stephen Ward, while the book and lyrics were written by Don Black and Christopher Hampton. Richard Eyre directs and the show stars Alexander Hanson, Charlotte Spencer, Joanna Riding, Charlotte Blackledge and Daniel Flynn.
Commenting on the production ending, producer Robert Fox said: “I am very sad to see the show close in London but firmly believe this piece will be seen by many audiences in the future.”
