Lorde tells fans ‘wear rainbow clothing’ after Westboro threats
Lorde has responded to threats from the Westboro Baptist Church to picket her upcoming gig in Kansas City.
Mocking the homophobic attitude that has played a part in making the American church so infamous, the Royals singer said in a now deleted tweet: “Everyone wear rainbow clothing to that show. Everyone try to kiss church members who are same sex as you they will so love it.”
“Christmas comin early in Kansas City,” she added.
In a press release on its website godhatesfags.com, Westboro Baptist Chuch claims Lorde – real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor – “has not been taught, and will not teach, young women to be sober and godly.”
The church also takes issue with the singer’s stage name of Lorde, calling the 17-year-old by her birth name, Ella, in the press release.
The planned picketing of Lorde’s Kansas City gig follows the church’s parody of Lorde’s international hit Royals, in which they criticise the “bloodlust” and “sinnin’ in the bedroom” apparently promoted in the number one song.
