Madonna named Billboard’s Woman of the Year

By Will Stroude

Billboard

have named Madonna Woman of the Year for 2016, following a triumphant 12 months which saw the musical icon extend her record as the highest-grossing female touring artist ever as the record-breaking Rebel Heart tour grossed a mammoth $1.31 billion.

“Madonna is one of a miniscule number of super-artists whose influence and career transcend music,” said Janice Min, president and chief creative officer of The Hollywood Reporter-Billboard Media Group.

“With her creative vision, relentless innovation, and dedication to philanthropic causes, she is an inspiration to hundreds of millions of people around the world, all while shattering every career record out there. She is an important feminist on top of that, a one-of-a-kind artist who’s used her influence to change the conversation around women, sexuality and equal rights.”

Madonna, who recently took to Instagram to shut down her ageist naysayers once again with a series of risque snaps, has also been praised for her recent philanthropic work, which includes helping to built Malawi’s first pediatric surgery and intensive care unit.

As well as an incredibly successful tour, Madge also extended her record for the most number one singles on the Billboard charts after earning her 46th top charting position on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart in 2016.

The seven-time Grammy winner will receive the award at this year’s Billboard Women in Music event, on December 9 – long may she reign!
