Madonna performs surprise Paris show at Place de la République

Madonna paid tribute to the victims of the November 13 Paris terror attacks last night with a surprise free gig in one of the city’s most visited public squares.

Directly after playing the first of two shows in Paris’s 23,000-capacity AccorHotel Arena, Madonna posted a picture of herself with son David Banda on social media, along with the caption: “Im singing some songs in place de la republique. Meet me there now #Paris. #rightnow #aftershow❤️ #rebelheartour.”

While many had to ask whether Madonna was playing a prank – unscheduled and impromptu performances from the queen of pop are not a regular occurrence – fans who rushed to the square Place de la République were richly rewarded.

Madonna did indeed arrive with son David and guitarist Monte Pittman in tow, and led fans – and bemused passers-by – in a campfire-esque singalong of recent single Ghosttown, a cover of John Lennon’s Imagine and her own iconic hit Like A Prayer.

Earlier in the evening, David had joined his mother on stage at the arena for a rendition of Bob Marley’s Redemption Song, also dedicated to the victims of the attack:
