Madonna re-records ‘La Isla Bonita’ for producer Diplo
By Nick Levine
Madonna has re-recorded her classic 1987 hit La Isla Bonita as an ode to Diplo, one of the producers she has worked with on her new album.
Diplo played a snippet of what he calls the La Isla Bonita “dubplate” for Radio One’s Annie Mac during an episode of Channel 4’s Superstar DJs.
In the clip, Madonna can be heard singing a revised version of the line “Last night I dreamt of San Pedro” to salute Diplo’s electro side-project Major Lazer. Listen below.
Back in May, Madonna told fans that she was working with Diplo on songs for her new album.
Diplo – who made his name working with MIA, herself a former Madonna collaborator, before going on to produce pop hits for Beyoncé (Run The World (Girls)), Usher (Climax) and Nicola Roberts (Beat of My Drum) – has since revealed that one of the songs they have recorded together has an incredible self-referential title.
Meanwhile, Madonna’s publicist has confirmed that another song earmarked for her new album is called Messiah – click here to find out more and hear a brief preview.
In recent months, the Queen of Pop has used her Instagram to reveal the diverse palette of collaborators she has assembled for her next album. The list now comprises Diplo, Sky Ferreira/Haim producer Ariel Rechtshaid, Wrecking Ball co-writer MoZella, DJ/producer Avicii, former Lady Gaga collaborator Martin Kierszenbaum, cult pop singer Natalia Kills, US hit-maker Toby Gad and R&B producer Symbolyc One.
Madonna’s last studio album, MDNA, was released in 2012 and reached number one in the US and UK. She scored her 13th and most recent UK chart-topping single with 4 Minutes in 2008.
