Mariah Carey engaged to Australian billionaire James Packer

By Ben Kelly

Mariah Carey is set to marry the Australian billionaire James Packer, just months after the pair were first revealed to be an item.

The 45 year old pop diva, who is one of the best selling artists of all time, began dating Packer last June, when the couple were spotted together in Italy, though they first met a few years ago at a film premiere in Aspen. She also performed at the opening of one of his casinos in Macau, China last year.

E is reporting that Packer proposed to Carey in New York last night, with a 35 carat ring.

A businessman, investor and philanthropist, James Packer is Australia’s fourth richest man, worth an estimated 4.7 billion Australian dollars. The 48 year old has been married twice before: once to glamour model and fashion designer Jodhi Meares, and once to singer and model Erica Baxter. He has three young children.

Speaking to CNN, a close friend of Packer’s confirmed the engagement and said they were “over the moon” that he had found happiness with Mariah.

Speaking on U.S TV in November, Mariah described him as her “new beau,” and said he was a great guy. “I’m lucky,” she added.

Mariah’s first husband was Sony boss Tommy Mottola, who she married in 1993. The marriage dissolved as a result of Mottola’s controlling nature, and creative differences between the pair. They divorced in 1997.

She met her second husband Nick Cannon in 2008 and they married in The Bahamas the same year. Together they had two children, twins Monroe and Moroccan, in 2011. The pair separated in August 2014 and divorced that December.
