Marvel’s chief executive Victoria Alonso said the ‘world is ready’ for an openly gay superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
This week, it was reported that Marvel Studios are actively looking for an LGBTQ actor to play a gay character in the upcoming movie Eternals, based on the Marvel comic series written by Jack Kirby.
The Eternals – which is one of Marvel’s lesser known series – are a species of humans who were created to be the defenders of Earth, which lead to the inevitability of war against their destructive counterparts, the Deviants.
And now, during the premiere for Captain Marvel – the studio’s first feature film starring a female lead – Marvel’s production chief emphasised why the studio is adamant to representation all diversities.
Alonso told Variety: “Why wouldn’t we be? Why wouldn’t we be? I’m so passionate about this I’ve got to tell you.
“Our entire success is based on people that are incredibly different. Why wouldn’t we? Why would we only want to be recognized by only one type of person?
“Our audience is global, is diverse, is inclusive. If we don’t do it that way for them, we will fail.
“If we don’t put pedal to the metal on the diversity and the inclusivity, we will not have continued success.
“Our determination is to have that for all of the people out there watching our movies.”
She was then asked whether the public is ready for an openly gay superhero in the MCU to which she replied: “The world is ready, the world is ready.”
If the rumours of the Eternals casting is true, it would mark the first time that the MCU featured an openly gay actor portraying an openly gay character.
And Alonso teased that they will be casting the ‘best Eternals cast’ that they can and said: “We are going to cast the best Eternals cast that we can and when we’re ready to announce it we promise you we will.”
