Matt Lucas does epic impression of Boris Johnson on ‘The Great British Bake Off’

"If you must bake in a tent, bake in a tent - but please don't bake in a tent."

By Jamie Tabberer

Matt Lucas has again impersonated Prime Minster Boris Johnson as he made his debut as a host on Channel 4 show The Great British Bake Off.

The Little Britain star previously called a stir when he imitated a bumbling Boris and his mixed messages over coronavirus in a May 2020 vlog.

Opening the new series of the baking competition last night, Matt-as-Boris says in his pre-recorded clip: “Right, let’s, er… yeah. Good evening. Let’s get straight to it.”

Seriously, it’s uncanny.

“We are now approaching Phase 46,” he continues. “Which means from Tuesday morning or Wednesday evening, depending on your height, we are saying with regards to baking, if you must bake in a tent, bake in a tent – but please don’t bake in a tent.”

Well, that’s clear then.

“And we are asking people to use common sense with regards to the distribution of hundreds and thousands. Now, I believe we have a quesiton from the lady in the funky dress.”

The camera then cuts to Mighty Boosh star and Matt’s fellow GBBO host Noel “Noelle” Fielding, who asks: “Is it sch-one, or sc-on-ne?”

“I’m going to hand over to the experts [judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith] on this,” replies Matt.

Suffice to say, Paul and Prue disagreed on the pronounciation, as the GBBO PM signs off: “I hope that cleared things up.”

Brilliant.

Matt Lucas is replacing Sandi Toksvig as GBBO host this year. He’s off to a brilliant start!

The Great British Bake off continues Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
