Years and Years star Maxim Baldry has landed a lead role in Amazon Prime’s Lord of the Rings series.
Last year, it was reported that the actor – who recently starred in Russell T Davies’ recent series – had joined the cast for the upcoming prequel to JRR Tolkien’s iconic franchise.
Although his role has been kept a secret, Deadline have now reported that his character will be the lead in the new series.
The new series is set thousands of years before the events of the trilogy and The Hobbit during Middle Earth’s Second Age.
Baldry joins the likes of Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Tom Budge, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers and Daniel Weyman.
Despite not airing yet, the series has already been renewed for a second season.
The world of Tolkien was brought to the big screen in Peter Jackson’s award winning Lord of the Rings trilogy starring the likes of Sir Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom and Sean Bean.
Jackson then went on to adapt Tolkien’s prequel novel, The Hobbit, into another three films starring Martin Freeman, Luke Evans and McKellen again, who reprised his role as Gandalf the Grey.
The new series will reportedly explore new storylines preceding The Fellowship of the Ring, which is the first of three volumes of the epic novel, The Lord of the Rings.
There were some rumours that the series would focus on a young Aragorn (portrayed by Viggo Mortensen in the Jackson movies).
