Maya Hawke said her Stranger Things character was never meant to be gay.
In the third season of the Netflix series, Hawke – who is the daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke – portrayed Robin and fans quickly fell in love with her chemistry with co-star Joe Keery, who plays Steve.
During the season, Steve confesses his love to Robin, but she reveals she is gay and now Hawke has revealed her character was originally intended to be Steve’s love interest.
While speaking to the Wall Street Journal Magazine, Hawke said: “Throughout filming, we started to feel like she and (Steve) shouldn’t get together, and that’s she’s gay.
“Even when I go back and watch earlier episodes, it just seems like the most obvious decision ever.
“The Duffer Brothers [creators] and [producer] Shawn Levy had a lot of conversations throughout shooting and it wasn’t really until we were shooting episode four and five, I think, that we made the final decision.”
The Netflix series is currently available to be streamed and a fourth season has been confirmed.
