McAvoy, Fassbender discuss being ‘shipped’ in gay fan fiction

Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy have discussed the romantic fan fiction “shipping” them since they starred together in the 2011 film X-Men: First Class.

Fans of the two actors, who will be seen together again in this month’s follow-up film X-Men: Days of Future Past, have taken the pair’s friendship one step further and created a wealth of fantasy stories and artwork based around an imaginary relationship between them.

During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show on Friday night (May 2), the actors were shown the suggestive drawing that appears to the right – in which McAvoy is pictured baking while bent over a kitchen counter top with Fassbender positioned right behind him.

“Whoever is creating this artwork, I applaud your artistry, by the way,” McAvoy said.

He then deadpanned: “It’s beautiful work, but if anybody is giving…”

Some of the stories and artwork involving the fantasy couple – who have been given the portmanteau “McBender” – is sweetly romantic, whereas other material is more sexually-charged. In one story, the Fassbender character is said to enjoy “kinks” in the bedroom which the McAvoy character is less keen on.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is released in the UK on May 22. In the meantime, watch the pair discussing the ‘McBender’ fan fiction on The Graham Norton Show below:
