Miley Cyrus licks a grand piano to help LGBT kids

By Micah Sulit

Miley Cyrus was at the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s 46th Anniversary Gala on Saturday (November 7), and since it wouldn’t be Miley without doing anything outrageous, the 22-year-old singer and headline-maker licked a grand piano.

It’s all for a good cause – the piano, donated by Orange is the New Black star Ruby Rose, was being auctioned for charity, and Miley was using her tongue to entice bidders.

The piano-licking was part of Miley’s acceptance speech for an award honouring her contributions to the LGBT community. The award was presented to her by staff of the Los Angeles LGBT Center and members of the The Happy Hippie Foundation.

Miley told the audience: “The first day that I got to visit you all is a day that I never will forget. And that’s because given the opportunity to sit in one of the support groups I walked away with a feeling of self-love that I have never been able to even give myself before. Because, you know my life until that point, I was subconsciously convinced that I had to label myself.”

She added: “I was so moved when I first heard someone sitting beside me say, ‘Some days I wake up and I’m the masculine version of myself and some days I wake up and I’m the feminine version of myself,’ she said.

“And that’s totally okay. And the LGBT Center had the key to the lock on my cage and they set me free.”

Miley also dished out some statistics on homeless and LGBTQ youths, explaining why she felt the need to get involved with the community.

“There are more than 1.6 million runaway or homeless young people in the US each year with 40% of homeless youth identifying as LGBTQ,” she said.  “And in Hollywood where we are all sitting, royally with all of our food in front of us and all of these fancy ass clothes…

“Something didn’t really feel quite right about it when we’re in a city where there are more than 6,100 homeless people under the age of 24 on the streets on any given day and more than one in four of these people have experienced hate crimes due to their race, sexual orientation or their gender identity.”
