A sequel to My Big Fat Greek Wedding is in the works 12 years after the release of the original film.

Gold Circle, HBO and Playtone are working on the project, with screenwriter and star Nia Vardolos returning for the second instalment, Deadline reports.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding became one of the biggest independent film releases of the early 2000s.

Vardolos will once again star as Toula, with groom John Corbett also returning for the sequel. The Portokalos family will also feature in the new film.

Speaking about the sequel, Vardalos said: “Now that I’m experiencing motherhood, I’m ready to write the next chapter of my family story.

“Of course a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true.”
