My Night with Reg: Exclusive look at London revival of Kevin Elyot’s modern gay classic

Modern gay classic My Night with Reg has been revived in a new London production starring comedian Stephen K Amos and former Hollyoaks star Gerard McCarthy – and we’ve been given an exclusive look at the production.

First produced in 1994, Kevin Elyot’s famed comedy-drama about a group of friends in 1980s London amid the mounting horror of the AIDS crisis was last revived in the capital seven years ago, in 2014.

Directed by Matt Ryan, the latest production stars James Bradwell, Edward M Corrie, Paul Keating, and Alan Turkington alongside Amos and McCarthy, and is playing at The Turbine Theatre, Battersea until 21 August.

Among the pantheon of ’90s theatre productions exploring the human cost of the AIDS crisis, My Night with Reg has often been heralded as one of the greatest, winning the Olivier Award for Best Comedy in 1995.

In a year that’s seen Russell T Davies’ It’s A Sin thrust the gay human toll of the AIDS Crisis back into the wider public consciousness, there’s never been a better time to relive – or experience for the first time – the power of Elyot’s own exploration of one of the period.

An official synopsis reads: “Set in Guy’s London flat, old friends and new gather to party through the night. This is the summer of 1985 and, for Guy and his circle, the world is about to change forever, thanks to the mounting AIDS crisis.”
