Natalie Imbruglia makes music comeback with Daft Punk cover

By Nick Bond

Well that was unexpected. Aussie singer Natalie Imbruglia – responsible for one of the finest pop songs of the ’90s, Torn – today announced that she’s prepping the release of her first new single in six years.

And…it’s a Daft Punk cover.

Natalie will release her version of the Daft Punk track Instant Crush on April 24. It comes just 18 months after the French dance duo released the single themselves from their top-selling Random Access Memories album, with Strokes singer Julian Casablancas on vocal duties.

“On the original version, you can’t really hear what the song is about because of the effect that Julian’s voice has, which I love, by the way. However, it is such a beautiful story that I want people to hear it and connect with the words. I’m really proud of the way it turned out,” Imbruglia said in a statement.

The single will be the first release from Imbruglia’s first studio album since Come to Life in 2009. Titled Male, it is a collection of classic and contemporary songs all originally performed by men including Cat Stevens, Damien Rice, Tom Petty, Pete Townsend and the Zac Brown Band.

Imbruglia, who celebrated her 40th birthday last month, promises she’ll support the new album’s release with a worldwide tour.

While we wait to hear Natalie’s version, let’s check out the original Instant Crush:
