Netflix have officially announced a 10-part revival of Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City.
The ’90s TV miniseries based on the LGBT classic book series will be coming back for a brand new series next year.
Original stars Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis will reprise their roles as Mary Ann Singleton and Ann Madrigal respectively, while X-Men‘s Ellen Page has been cast as Mary Ann’s daugher.
Adapted from Armistead Maupin’s best-selling series about a young woman who moves to San Francisco, Tales of the City first aired in the UK in 1993 on Channel 4, before debuting in the States in 1994.
The series sparked plenty of controversy at the time for its frank depcition of LGBT themes, then still a rarity on television.
According to an official synopsis, the revivial “follows Mary Ann (Laura Linney), who returns home to San Francisco and is reunited with her daughter (Ellen Page) and ex-husband Brian, twenty years after leaving them behind to pursue her career.
“Fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture-perfect Connecticut life created, Mary Ann returns home to her chosen family and will quickly be drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis) and the residents of 28 Barbary Lane.”
To mark the announcement Netflix have also released the first page of the revival’s script, which sees Mary Ann return to her former home at Barbery Lane.
There have been nine installments in Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City series since the first book was published in 1978, with the last, entitled The Days of Anna Madrigal, coming in 2014.
In a statement, 73-year-old author, who will co-produce the new series, said: “I couldn’t be more excited about this new brand-new incarnation of Tales. It’s set in present-day San Francisco with all the joys and complications that might suggest for the residents of 28 Barbary Lane”.
“Mrs. Madrigal’s tenants, both old and new, will be entangled in delicious new adventures and ever-expanding possibilities for love.”
Tales of the City is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2019.
