The Eurovision Song Contest may have been cancelled this year, but we’ll still be getting our fix of Euro-pop madness in the form of Netflix’s upcoming comedy musical Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.
The film, which is set to arrive on the streaming service on 26 June, stars Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams as aspiring musicians Lars and Sigrit, aka Fire Saga, who are given the opportunity to represent their country at the world’s biggest song competition.
Over the weekend, to coincide with what would have been the date of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, fans were given their first taste of the movie in the form of a mock Euro-pop video for Fire Saga’s infecious track ‘Volcano Man’ – and honestly? It’s 12 points from us.
With its sweeping vistas of desolate Scandi-scape, neck-breaking electrosynth tempo changes and heartfelt, emotional lyrics about a man who lives in volcano, it nails the camp, ridiculous drama that makes Eurovision such a beloved institution.
Producers have defintely made an effort when it comes to the music: McAdams’ part is actually sung by Swedish singer Molly Sandén, aka My Marianne, who has competed in the country’s famous Eurovision selection process, Melodifestivalen, three times.
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga also stars Dan Stevens, Pierce Brosnan and Demi Lovato – the latter of whom is already confirmed to be singer a song called ‘In The Mirror’.
Writer and star Will Ferrell opened up about his long-standing love of Eurovision during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show last week (15 May) as he recalled the first time he watched the compeititon.
“This happened literally twenty years ago visiting my wife’s family in Sweden,” he told Norton.
“One evening her cousin said, ‘Shall we sit down and watch Eurovision?’ and I said OK. We proceeded to sit there for three straight hours and watch the Eurovision finals while my mouth was slack-jawed. I couldn’t believe what I was watching.”
The Anchorman star added: “Everything that you guys know — the spectacle, the humour in it, and the camp — was intoxicating. I always thought someone has to make a movie about it and no one had. We started to get the ball rolling about four years ago.”
